May 20, 2012 - Flower Day Detroit Eastern Market

The 46th Annual Eastern Market Flower Day was held Sunday, May 20, 2012. The event seems to be a jumper cable for igniting spring activities in the Detroit metro area and is attended annually by an estimated 200,000 people. Detroit Metro Mashup staff have been to Flower Day several times and it is easily crowded enough, all day long, for that number to be true. Fortunately, the crowds are a great part of the excitement of Flower Day and watching others wheel away carts full of flowers and foliage can inspire one’s own gardening ideas.

Further adding to the “rebirth of spring” that Flower Day epitomizes, the Eastern Market has been undergoing extensive renovations to keep it in the forefront of the rebirth of Detroit overall, along with the Riverwalk, the Dequindre Cut Greenway, the renovations that were done on Campus Martius, and many, many other improvements and upgrades to the downtown area. According to their website (
http://www.detroiteasternmarket.com), “The renovations being done to Shed 5 continue the makeover of Eastern Market. Building upon tradition and positioning Eastern Market for greater success in the years ahead, the investment of more than $50 million over the next ten years is intended to improve the Eastern Market campus and enhance our role in providing fresh locally grown food and quality landscape materials to the greater Detroit region.”

Detroit Metro Mashup staff always take pictures at Flower Day, so click on the link and check out our photo journal from Flower Day 2012. Flower Day 2013 will be on Sunday, May 19. See you there!
