August 25, 2013 - Oakland Airport open house and air show

The 28th Annual Oakland County International Airport open house was held Sunday, August 25th and Detroit Metro Mashup went to check it out, as we usually do, because it is a fun local event. The open house is always on a Sunday and begins at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast. Civilian and military aircraft are on display, including World War II airplanes that are still actively flying, and there is an aerobatics show from 2-3p.m.

The number and types of airplanes on the tarmac this year appeared to be larger than in years past. There was also airport firefighting equipment along with military vehicles and both helicopter and airplane rides were available for a fee. The Detroit Pistons jet was there along with jets from the University of Michigan (life flight) and others.

There were vendors with food, drinks, and merchandise for sale along with a section for children to play on the bouncing equipment. The NASA table is always a crowd favorite and was set up indoors, providing a great opportunity to cool off while getting informed. There is a $5 parking fee, but admission is free. Bring your sunscreen!

Oakland International Airport is owned by Oakland County and located in Waterford, MI.
