June 20-22, 2014 - Detroit River Days

The 8th Annual GM River Days Festival, sponsored by the Soaring Eagle Hotel and Casino, was held in Detroit June 20-22, 2014. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy began and continues to operate this great event that takes place along the ever-enhanced and extended Detroit RiverWalk. There were a lot of changes to the Detroit International Riverfront itself, with the walkway now extending considerably farther, up to the intersection of Atwater St. and the Dequindre Cut Trail. This is where the DNR’s new Outdoor Adventure Center is located in the renovated Globe Building, which used to be a steam engine factory.

The River Days Festival has a something for everyone, from hard rocking bands to the quiet perusing of paintings, photographs, and nature. There are multiple stages for the music, jugglers from the Detroit Circus, big metal sculptures, tall ships, a carnival with a large Ferris Wheel, other rides, and snacks, food vendors offering a wide variety of tasty treats, beer and cocktail stands, a sand sculpture montage, a sidewalk water fountain that is much-loved by the children, Transformers in the GM lobby, and much more. As one walks in the general direction of the Dequindre Cut Trail, you encounter wildlife areas bordering the walkway, with lots of native plants, butterflies, birds and other creatures.

Admission to the festival is only $3, with children three and under and seniors over 65 admitted for free. Detroit Metro Mashup attends River Days every year and we always find new things to photograph and have a great time doing it. Go check out our photos, above; we think seeing them will make you want to get down to the Detroit River next year.
